Stair treads and risers
We install new hardwood treads and risers and finish them on site. This is the usual way to replace carpeted stairs with wood. Treads are stained to match the floor. Risers can be stained the same color or painted.
Refinishing existing stairs
Wood stairs that are worn on the nosing or stuck in an old color can be sanded and refinished like a floor. Stairs take more hand work than a room does, since every tread, riser and corner is sanded individually.
Handrails
We install new handrails and finish them, and we refinish existing ones. A handrail in the old color is the first thing people notice after a floor has been refinished darker or lighter, so it is worth doing in the same visit.
Iron spindles
Replacing wood balusters with iron spindles changes a staircase more than almost any other single update. We take out the wood balusters and set iron in their place under the existing or a new handrail. If you would rather keep wood balusters, we can stain them to match the new floor color.
Do the stairs with the floor
When stairs and floors are finished in the same job, they get the same stain and the same finish, applied at the same time. That is the simplest way to make sure they match.
